Monomoka. Derrière ce nom ne se cachent pas deux maniaques d’un café noble au goût sauvage, cultivé au Yémen. Mais grandir en Pologne dans les années post socialistes permet d’acquérir des talents certains, loin de la décadence ambiante. « Nous sommes deux sœurs jumelles, et depuis l’enfance nous partageons la même perception du monde ». Adolescentes, Catherine et Monica Gwiazdowski pratiquent avec enthousiasme l’art ancestral du crochet, de la couture et du tricot. La mode et ses mystères les entraînent peu à peu vers les arts majeurs, jusqu’aux études d’architecture (diplômées en 1999 – Wroclaw Polytechnic) qui scelleront leur style raffiné mais brut, mix subtil entre forme et fonction.

Project MONOMOKA
A la suite d’un voyage à Venise, le projet Monomoka voit le jour. Il est né de leurs expériences multiples en design d’intérieur et projets architecturaux. Le nom Monomoka symbolise leur connexion, elles se proclament inséparables. Tous les éléments sont réalisés à la main, leur réalisation a coûté de longs mois de travail. Pour l’instant la collection comporte 13 pièces, toutes plus belles les unes que les autres. En 2008, les deux sœurs ont été rejointes par Piotr Saladra.

Ce travail subtil et résolument moderne leur a valu d’être primés du Furniture Design Award 2013 , concours prestigieux organisé à Singapour, sélectionnant les projets les plus innovants de jeunes créateurs venus du monde entier. Le jury évalue les projets qui cherchent à l’innovation, la valeur écologique et la fonctionnalité des solutions. The hive, un pouf fait de 1600 modules de lin brut crocheté a remporté la palme. En 2012, le pouf “Sleeping mice (photo 2) est arrivé finaliste de la compétition organisée par l’Association des designers d’intérieur britanniques Society of British Interior Design

Aurélie Mathigot sublime le lin chez merci

merci et le lin européen c’est une longue histoire d’amour. Pour la deuxième fois, le concept store parisien donne carte blanche à l’artiste Aurélie Mathigot pour une mise en scène du lin, version arty et intemporel.
Nous l’avons croisé par hasard sur le trottoir du boulevard Beaumarchais, son vélo à la main. L’occasion de lui poser quelques questions sur son travail in situ. Elle nous a raconté son désir de montrer la naturalité de la matière, forcément sublimée par sa main.

Premier contact: la désormais star du lieu. La fiat 500, mascote écarlate, est totalement rhabillé de lirette de lin patiemment tissé.

En pénétrant dans la nef de cette cathédrale industrielle, le regard est attiré vers le haut. Une suspension géante protège les lieux: myriade de morceaux d’étoffe en lin brut, délicatement parés de feuille d’or, d’argent ou de cuivre. Aurélie a utilisé les chutes des sacs de shopping, réalisés pour l’expo sur le modèle des sacs plastique. Une série limitée repeinte de sa main orne le mur du fond. On peut en faire l’acquisition (59 €) ou choisir un sac simple, décliné dans les couleurs de la gamme été 2013: une dizaine de coloris désirables que l’on retrouve sur les collections de linge de maison.

Ne pas manquer son travail de broderie sur photo (la photo est l’essentiel de son travail d’artiste), autre versant de son art. Considérant que la vie, plus encore la vie d’artiste, procède d’une perpétuelle remise en question, elle s’est approprié le langage de la broderie – comme avant elle d’autres femmes artistes telle Annette Messager ou Rosemarie Trockel –, c’est « parce qu’il offre la possibilité de se tromper, de défaire et de refaire, sans altération du matériau ». Une retouche de l’image en volume pour gagner du sens (celui du toucher).

Waddesdon Manor, près de Londres: Joan Sallas maîtrise le pliage de serviettes en lin

ARTICLE PASSIONNANT ! Le designer Joan Sallas fait revivre les arts ancestraux de la table à travers sa maîtrise du pliage de serviettes en lin et de l’origami. Il réalise des œuvres dans un style plus contemporain pour montrer comment cet art a évolué.
Construit en 1877 par le Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild afin de présenter sa collection d’art au public mondain de l’époque, Waddesdon Manor propose, désormais, aux artistes de créer in situ en composant avec l’histoire du domaine. Joan Sallas et Philippa Lawrence montrent leur travail dans le cadre du programme d’art contemporain du château, qui accueille aussi l’exposition « Sacred stiches ».

Le designer Joan Sallas, artiste espagnol, évoque le temps où dresser une table était un art à part entière. En collaboration avec le musée d’Holburne à Bath, la salle à manger de Waddesdon Manor est le théâtre de reconstitutions historiques avec serviettes en lin finement pliées et présentées telles qu’elles auraient pu l’être pour de somptueux banquets. A travers sa maîtrise du pliage, cet artiste réalise des œuvres dans un style plus contemporain pour montrer comment cet art a évolué.

In June, the linen of the fields becomes the linen of the city, in a setting designed by Hilton McConnico.
In Paris, on Place du Palais-Royal from June 3-9, and in Florence, on Piazza Santa Maria Novella, from June 18-22, a teleportation of the agricultural kind places us in the middle of a parcel of linen flax, in bloom and being harvested. This project, focused on the general public acts as a reminder that linen flax isn’t some sort of exotic plant; that 85% of global production takes place HERE, in Europe, in a swathe of land stretching from Caen to Amsterdam.

The only textile fibre of plant origin from our continent is being showcased to the general public for the first time via all the avenues of its application. The juxtaposition of objects has a surprising effect. A motorcycle helmet, skis, a bicycle, an armchair, a suitcase, a surfboard, street lamps and a chair.

What’s the common link? The answer is linen in composite form, a new material in fiber and resin that is proving so inspiring to contemporary designers. And why the sneakers and knitted sailor top? Once again, the answer is linen: outerwear and waterproof for the former; Nm 39 yarn (requiring 39km of thread per kilo, giving ultra-light knits) for the latter.

The exhibition route leads to a vast 10-meter-tall structure, with a spectacular but ephemeral nave, whose double-door entrance – being textile and sensorial – immerses the public in the diversity of linen: a selection of over 300 pieces to discover, touch, brush against, and so on, all highlighting the savoir-faire of European linen spinners and weavers. Fabrics range from ultra-light batiste voile to upholstery fabric coming in at a hefty 1kg-per-m2.

Photographic exhibition. Some forty exclusive black and white images by Sébastien Randé puts the focus on the human aspect of linen production, highlighting our proximity to this industry, its European position, and the unique interaction between grower and scutcher.
