Textile art museum in Sardinia

Samugheo textile art museum

Samugheo stands on a rolling hill in an area called Brabaxianna, with its typical houses built in trachyte. It is a village of old traditions, known throughout Sardinia for its flourishing production of textile craftwork.

The museum is located in a two-floor building in the periphery of Samugheo, a centre renowned for its thriving textile production.
The village geographic isolation has preserved its cultural and handicraft traditions over the years from the innovations introduced by other Sardinian centres.
The museum complex is divided into different rooms. One part of the exhibition is located in the ethnographic section which hosts traditional wooden looms, various tools and instruments for the weaving. Afterwards, it offers an exhibition of Samugheo’s daily and festive clothes.
The next sector is dedicated to Cocco’s permanent collection with the display of 1700 precious textiles, handmade of wool, cotton and linen. Among the rarest pieces, the « affaciadas », very small carpets to be hung on balconies during Corpus Domini procession.
One part of the structure is, instead, entirely devoted to the organization of thematic displays aimed at appreciating the variety and preciousness of the textile tradition, still handed down from mother to daughter and vital in Samugheo.
There also two looms, a vertical one and an horizontal one, which the public can use to learn and compare old and modern weaving techniques.
