For three weeks each summer, Edinburgh becomes the cultural capitol of the world presenting the very best in international drama, dance, music and opera as the Edinburgh International Festival. Equally famous is the Edinburgh Festival “Fringe” for its off-the-wall performances, comedy and madcap street-theatre.
For Bill Baber Knitwear the festival is a hectic time as people from around the globe visit Edinburgh, not only for the cultural experience, but to shop in the beautiful capitol city of Scotland. Bill Baber Knitwear situated in the historic Grassmarket, is a true “knitwear designer” business – each piece is a one-off. Jackets, dresses, tops and sweaters made by hand using only natural and vegetable fibres. A true family business Helen, Bill’s wife is the principle designer whilst their son Jack has recently joined them to open a new shop in York.
Bill says “In Edinburgh we all layer-up as we don’t know what the temperature will be like between home and office, or house to house when we go visiting! Might as well make every layer count, so we always look good!” Seen here is “Tango” a lightweight over-top shift dress in Linen with a “Sally” dress beneath it, also in Linen – Linen on Linen has got to be twice as comfortable!

Nicole Bridger was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. She obtained her BAA in fashion design from Ryerson University in Toronto ON. She then went to London, UK to intern at Vivienne Westwood where she learned the art of sculpting fabric and returned with an understanding of doing more than just making clothes. Bridger came back to Vancouver looking to learn some of the business side of things and paired up with the owner of Lululemon Athletica to co-create Oqoqo, a casual eco clothing line. She was then ready to put her design and business sides together to create her own label of socially conscious contemporary women’s wear, Nicole Bridger.
She uses organic cotton, linen, hemp, modal, tencel, organic wool and silk. What makes a fabric sustainable for the most part is what it is made of. « Linen and hemp are really the most eco fibres there are — they require very little water or pesticides to grow, unlike organic cotton, which though does not use pesticides but requires a lot of water ».

With the creation of the Technical Pole and its European Scientific Commitee, the CELC helps bring its members towards the future to discover new technical opportunities such as composite, high performance products and eco building.
LInen Dream Lab Paris and Milan are the CELC showrooms for expression, dedicated to creation and innovation for fabrics and techniques.
Having opened in March 2009 in Paris and February 2010 in Milan, the Linen Dream Lab proposes its services by appointment to order-givers in the fashion, art of living and design industries.

« Attached to the land but open to the world » is the flax history in Europe. From Riga to Belfast, from Kortrijk to Venice, from Saint Malo to Cadiz, from Lille to Milan… it spreads out to all parts of the globe through its markets but it is also synonymous of a typically European way of life.
Nowadays, 70% of the worldwide flax production come from European lands, whose of which 80% are from France.

Savile Row tailors: Anderson & Sheppard, Henry Poole and Huntsman promoted European Linen
in a month long window campaign. “Perfect for most social occasions, linen exudes a sense of relaxed confidence” says Poppy Charles of Huntsman. “Yes, it crumples and yes, it looks lived in, but the joy of linen is that it can and should look just so, elegant but easy going.”
Huntsman carry a superb range of linens and linen blends from some great British and Italian mills, key being Solbiati and Scabal. All of the linens are available in a spectrum of colours and designs – classic navy or straw, pastels, checks & stripes.
The window theme, LONG LIVE LINEN, highlighted these benefits:
Linen from Europe: tailoring’s most environmentally friendly cloth.
Renewable – Sustainable – Locally Sourced – Low Carbon Footprint – No waste – No water.
